Best time to visit Gujarat

October to March

October to March is best — pleasant days, cool nights. The famous Rann Utsav (White Desert festival) runs roughly November to February. Summers (April-June) are very hot and dry; the monsoon greens up the Saurashtra hills but the salt desert is flooded and off-limits.

Heritage centre — Ahmedabad & around

1

Ahmedabad

Central Gujarat

What it is. India's first UNESCO World Heritage City — old-town "pols", Sabarmati Ashram, and incredible street food.

Why visit. Gandhi's ashram, the carved Sidi Saiyyed mosque, and a heritage walk through 600-year-old lanes.

Tip. Do the early-morning heritage walk from Swaminarayan temple (7:30 am) — it's the best intro to the old city.

2

Adalaj Stepwell

Near Ahmedabad

What it is. A five-storey, intricately carved 15th-century step-well (vav) just outside Ahmedabad.

Why visit. One of the most beautiful step-wells in India — cool, quiet, and astonishingly detailed.

Tip. Easy 30-minute drive from Ahmedabad. Go mid-morning when light reaches down the well.

3

Vadodara (Baroda)

Central Gujarat

What it is. A cultured city built around the vast Laxmi Vilas Palace — four times the size of Buckingham Palace.

Why visit. The palace, museums, and a great food scene. A good base for Champaner and the Statue of Unity.

Tip. The Laxmi Vilas Palace audio tour is worth it — parts are still the royal family's home.

4

Champaner-Pavagadh

Near Vadodara

What it is. A UNESCO archaeological park — a 16th-century city ruin below the Pavagadh hill temple.

Why visit. Rare pre-Mughal Islamic architecture plus a ropeway up to a major Shakti Peeth temple.

Tip. Combine the ruins (morning) with the Pavagadh ropeway temple (afternoon) in one day trip.

Statue & temples of the centre-north

5

Statue of Unity (Kevadia)

Narmada district

What it is. The world's tallest statue (182 m) — Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, with a viewing gallery in the chest.

Why visit. A genuinely impressive feat, with a valley-of-flowers, jungle safari, and river views around it.

Tip. Book the viewing-gallery slot online — it sells out. The evening light-and-sound show is excellent.

6

Modhera Sun Temple

Mehsana district

What it is. An 11th-century temple to the Sun God, built so the first rays hit the idol at the equinoxes.

Why visit. Exquisite carving and a beautiful stepped tank — far less crowded than Konark.

Tip. Pair with Patan (1 hour away). The January Modhera dance festival is a special time to visit.

7

Rani ki Vav (Patan)

Patan · north Gujarat

What it is. A UNESCO step-well so iconic it's printed on the ₹100 note — seven storeys of sculpture.

Why visit. The finest step-well in India, with over 500 major sculptures. Patan is also famous for Patola silk sarees.

Tip. Watch a Patola weaving demo in Patan town — a single saree can take months to make.

The wild west — Kutch & Saurashtra

8

Rann of Kutch (White Desert)

Kutch · west Gujarat

What it is. A vast white salt desert that stretches to the horizon — best seen on a full-moon night.

Why visit. A deeply important pilgrimage site with a dramatic seafront setting and a moving evening aarti.

Tip. The light-and-sound show after dark tells the temple's long history. Dress modestly.

13

Dwarka

West Saurashtra coast

Why visit. Major spiritual significance, plus the nearby Bet Dwarka island and Nageshwar Jyotirlinga.
