Places to Visit in and Around Udaipur

Udaipur is small, slow, and very pretty. The City Palace looks at Lake Pichola, the Lake Palace floats in the middle of it, and on a winter morning the whole town looks like a film set.

This list covers the 12 places that really matter — the in-town palaces, the lakes, the gardens, and the day-trip forts and temples that pair well with a 3-4 day Udaipur stay.

Best time to visit Udaipur

October to March

Best from late October to March — cool and clear. April-June is dry and hot (40°C+). July-September is the green monsoon — the lakes look fuller and the air is fresh.

12 top places to visit in Udaipur

1

City Palace

Old Udaipur

What it is. A sprawling palace complex on the east bank of Lake Pichola — the largest royal palace in Rajasthan.

Why visit. Mirror rooms, peacock courtyards, the famous Crystal Gallery, and balconies right over the lake.

Tip. Go at 9:30 am opening to skip queues. Buy the composite ticket — it covers multiple sections.

2

Lake Pichola Boat Ride

Old Udaipur

What it is. A 30-45 minute boat ride from Rameshwar Ghat past the Lake Palace, with a stop at Jagmandir Island.

Why visit. The Udaipur photo everyone takes. Even more magical at sunset when the white marble glows golden.

Tip. Sunset boats sell out in winter — book at the City Palace counter in the morning.

3

Jagdish Temple

Old Udaipur

What it is. A grand 17th-century Hindu temple, 100 metres from the City Palace, dedicated to Vishnu.

Why visit. Free entry, beautiful carved exterior, and morning aarti is one of Udaipur's quiet highlights.

Tip. Cover shoulders and knees. Easy to combine with your City Palace visit — they're next door.

4

Saheliyon Ki Bari

North Udaipur

What it is. An 18th-century "garden of the maids" — fountains, marble elephants, lotus pools.

Why visit. Easy, shady, family-friendly. The fountains run on rain-water pressure with no pumps — still magical.

Tip. Quick 30-minute stop. Pair with a thali lunch at the nearby Natraj Dining Hall.

5

Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace)

Hilltop, west of Udaipur

What it is. A 19th-century palace high on Bansdara hill — built to watch the monsoon clouds.

Why visit. A full 360° view of Udaipur — all three lakes, the City Palace, and the Aravalli hills behind.

Tip. Go before 11 am (less haze) or for sunset. Small cars only; bigger vehicles drop you partway and you walk.

6

Bagore Ki Haveli

Gangaur Ghat

What it is. A restored 18th-century riverside haveli now a museum + traditional folk-dance theatre.

Why visit. The 1-hour Dharohar dance show every evening (7 pm) is the best cultural evening in Udaipur — at ₹150 it's a steal.

Tip. Reach by 6:30 pm to get good seats. Combine with a Lake Pichola sunset just before.

7

Fateh Sagar Lake

North Udaipur

What it is. The second-largest lake in Udaipur, with a perimeter road that locals walk in the evenings.

Why visit. Less crowded than Lake Pichola, with three small islands. Take a quick boat to Nehru Garden island.

Tip. The lakeside chaat-and-corn stalls along the road are excellent. Skip the islands in monsoon if it's pouring.

8

Karni Mata Ropeway

Behind City Palace

What it is. A short 5-minute cable car to the Karni Mata temple on Machla Magra hill.

Why visit. The single best sunset view of Lake Pichola, the City Palace, and the Lake Palace lit up.

Tip. Open mornings + evenings only (closed 1:30-5 pm). Easy to combine with Nagda ruins next door.

What it is. A 15th-century mountain fort with the world's second-longest continuous wall (36 km, after the Great Wall of China).

Why visit. Massive, dramatic, and far less crowded than Jaipur's forts. The light-and-sound show at 6:45 pm is excellent.
